Assignment - Performance Forecast

OBJECTIVE:

Forecast performance for your chosen player through the final year of his team control (the season he passes 6.000 MLS)

INSTRUCTIONS:

Make an analytical attempt to forecast the following metrics for each upcoming season: plate appearances, home runs, runs scored, RBI, stolen bases, OPS, Wins Above Replacement (Fangraphs).

Use analytical rationale to forecast performance: recognizing aging curves and reasonable improvement/decrease in performance. Additionally, consider past injuries for the player and the potential for missed time in upcoming seasons.

Show the yearly forecasted stat lines for your player.

Total the forecasted performance for a cumulative stat line.

Yearly Performance Forecast

I looked at 4 different collections of players following a similar technique as shown in class - sorting and filtering to find similar players and used them to predict future year’s outcomes. The 4 main focuses were: general (focused more on WAR and wRC+), HR (which focused more on underlying stats more likely to produce HRs - HardHit%, FB%, Pull%, etc.), OPS focused (more on Barrel%, BB%, etc.), and SB focused (Sprint Speed). I also looked at Fangraphs as a guide after I combined all these into a single sheet to see how close it might be for the next 3 years, but I never used it as my final prediction. I also asked AI to forecast it based on modern analytic and projection systems to take the collection of data I gathered to see what it might come up with. It claims it used a “hybrid of recency-weighted regression + per-PA rate normalization + HR mean regression + MLB age curves.”

After that, I reviewed all 6 season’s predictions and picked which outcome I thought was most likely based on his first year stats. All predictions except for the one focused on SB had him stealing significantly more SB than I thought would be the case. But it doesn’t mean those views weren’t valuable. So, the above is my combined prediction through the following 5 views (General, HR, OPS, SB, AI).

Based on Caminero’s age, I don’t suspect him to decline significantly in any major statistic. In fact, I could see even more growth from him in future years as he should be hitting his peak years at the end of this 6-year cycle. If anything, you could see a massive improvement toward the end of 2030 and beyond since he’ll only be 26+.

Health & Durability - How did the player's injury history influence your PA or IP projections?

Caminero has only had one injury that’s kept him from playing that I could find. The apparent quad injury happened in 2024. However, since August 2024, he’s been healthy and appears to have put that injury behind him. Barring a freak injury, Caminero has a good chance to play 150+ games for the foreseeable future.
