Junior Caminero
Player Evaluation
Junior Caminero is an offensive force. In 2025, he showed he was one of the top 30 qualified hitters (28th) based on his 129 wRC+ according to Fangraphs. He accomplished this feat by hitting 45 HR., with a .535 SLG (compared to the .496 SLG MLB Avg), and 130 OPS+.
All these offensive numbers are backed by his underlying statcast metrics that light up red in all the right places. In 2025, he had 100th percentile batspeed, 91st percentile xSLG, 92nd percentile Avg Exit Velo, 87th percentile Barrel %, and 92nd percentile Hard-Hit %, meaning he hits the ball hard and, when he does, he makes quality contact in the upper echelon of MLBers.
Other underlying metrics to suggest there is more behind Caminero’s bat is xwOBA, which is a good indicator of future success and is relatively consistent from 2025 to the start of 2026 (.346 in 2025 and .358 to start 2026). Additionally, it’s hard to think that even with how good his 2025 was, Caminero was actually considered unlucky with a BABIP of .260 (compared to league average .291). In 2026, it’s even lower with .250 compared to league average at .290.
Strengths and Skills
And even though it isn’t otherworldly, he strikes out less than the average MLB player (19.1% compared to the 22.5% average), additionally highlighting his offensive value. This is something he’s clearly working on as his Chase % (from 22nd percentile to 51st percentile), Whiff% (47th percentile to 65th percentile), K% (64th percentile to 78th percentile), and BB% (26th percentile to 56th percentile) have all increased in the beginning part of 2026.
Areas for Growth
Given Caminero’s value is mostly derived from his offensive outputs, he has even more potential, as strange as that might sound, to become an even better hitter. He could be a bit more patient as a hitter. In 2025, his Chase % (22nd percentile) and BB% (26th percentile) are all in the lower quarter of MLB hitters, and his Whiff % is less than league average (47th percentile). This means he swings and misses a bit too much and chases balls outside the zone. This ultimately leads to a lower walk rate. As mentioned above, he looks to be clearly working on this during the early parts of 2026. And if he can force pitchers into the zone more by continuing to develop more patience and chasing less, he has the potential to rival Aaron Judge as the top hitter in the sport.
The other area he could attempt to improve would be his GB/FB ratio. He hits more groundballs (46.7% GB rate in 2025 compared to the 2025 average of 41.9%) than the average player and, because of that, his GB/FB ratio is also lower. We’ve already seen his power, so if he could turn a few more of those groundballs into flyballs, he could potentially improve on his already stellar offensive numbers, turning ground ball outs into extra-base hits.
The biggest area of improvement for Caminero is his defence. Unfortunately, even though it’s still early in 2026, his OAA is -7 and 1st percentile. This might ultimately mean he needs to move over to first base in the future if his defensive capabilities continue to diminish.
Role & Strategic Value
Caminero is an everyday power-hitting 3B meant to hit in the heart of Tampa’s lineup. Because he plays a corner infield spot, his defence doesn’t need to be stellar. The -3 OAA ranks in the 19th percentile and 22/30 of players to play at least 500 innings at the hot corner. His bat more than makes up for his defensive limitations. However, if he can improve his defence even a little, to league average, which he has time to do as a younger player, he will increase his value even more.
Ultimately, as he ages or if his defence gets drastically worse, there is a chance he’ll have to move over to the other side of the diamond and play 1B. But that’s more than a few years away, given that he’s about to play his age 22 season. Additionally, while his arm strength isn’t as good, he has similar Savant numbers to Manny Machado, who played a worse 3B (-6 OAA), so Caminero could stick at 3rd for quite some time.
The move to first or to more of a DH role will have to wait at least a few seasons if the team composition remains as it’s currently constructed. Yandy Diaz is the everyday DH and Johnathan Aranda is the primary 1B. So, the two of them are taking these at-bats throughout 2026 and possibly 2027 (depending on Diaz’s vesting option). However, Rafael Devers was able to put up a massive defensive season in 2019 (99th percentile) after being regularly below average, even if he went back to being below average after 2019. So, improvements in defence aren’t unheard of.
Value Assessment
Generating 4.6 fWAR in 2025. As a pre-arb player making league minimum, he generated $36.5M value in fWAR (or roughly $35.7M in surplus value) and is projected to do the same this year because his underlying hitting metrics are unlikely to diminish anytime soon. Having a player consistently worth 4+ WAR on the cheap is paramount to the Rays’s (or any team in baseball’s) success.
In 2026 and beyond, forecasts suggest Caminero will continue to put up 4+ WAR, while continuing to put up at least 30 homers a season and slugging around .500. He’ll continue to be a significantly above average hitter as he is unlikely to toss up a wRC+ less than 125 for the next 5 seasons.
He already put up $35M in surplus value in his first season. Barring an early extension, he’ll continue to put up $30M in surplus value for 2026 and 2027 before heading into arbitration where he’ll likely continue to put up surplus value throughout his entire time under team control. Having such a young player as this in your organization is someone you can build a team around for the next 5 seasons as he continues to provide significant value to the Rays.
PERFORMANCE FORECAST
PROJECTION LOGIC
I looked at 4 different collections of players to find similar players and used them to predict future year’s outcomes. The 4 main focuses were: general (focused more on WAR and wRC+), HR (which focused more on underlying stats more likely to produce HRs - HardHit%, FB%, Pull%, etc.), OPS focused (more on Barrel%, BB%, etc.), and SB focused (Sprint Speed). I also looked at Fangraphs as a guide after I combined all these into a single sheet to see how close it might be for the next 3 years, but I never used it as my final prediction. I also asked AI to forecast it based on modern analytic and projection systems to take the collection of data I gathered to see what it might come up with. It claims it used a “hybrid of recency-weighted regression + per-PA rate normalization + HR mean regression + MLB age curves.”
After that, I reviewed all 6 season’s predictions and picked which outcome I thought was most likely based on his first year stats. All predictions except for the one focused on SB had him stealing significantly more SB than I thought would be the case. But it doesn’t mean those views weren’t valuable. So, the above is my combined prediction through the following 5 views (General, HR, OPS, SB, AI).
Based on Caminero’s age, I don’t suspect him to decline significantly in any major statistic. In fact, I could see even more growth from him in future years as he should be hitting his peak years at the end of this 6-year cycle. If anything, you could see a massive improvement toward the end of 2030 and beyond since he’ll only be 26+.
Health & Durability
Caminero has only had one injury that’s kept him from playing that I could find. The apparent quad injury happened in 2024. However, since August 2024, he’s been healthy and appears to have put that injury behind him. Additionally, his body composition doesn’t give me any future injury concerns. Barring a freak injury, Caminero has a good chance to play 150+ games for the foreseeable future.
COMPARATIVE ANALYSIS & SALARY ESTIMATES
The three best player comps are Rafael Devers, Vladimir Guerrero Jr. and Pete Alonso. All are power hitting corner infielders that derive most of their value from their offensive contributions. With the exception of the odd year, all these players have below average OAA year over year. All counting stats are similar across the years throughout these three players HR, RBI, SLG, and Runs.
Historical Comps
Arb 1 Estimate: $ 7,500,000
Arb 2 Estimate: $ 13,500,000
Arb 3 Estimate: $ 19,500,000
Arbitration Forecast
Arb 1 Estimate Rationale: $ 7,500,000
He is awfully close to Pete Alonso in career HRs, producing a similar career wRC+ as both Alonso and Guerrero Jr.. If we assume he can stick at 3rd, his defensive value will also enable him to produce ~13.3 career WAR. Alonso and Guerrero Jr.’s platform years are a bit better from a counting stat perspective. Therefore, I don’t think he’d match Guerrero Jr.’s $7.9M, but he should do better than Alonso’s $7.4M.

Career Through Platform Year
Arb 2 Estimate Rationale: $13,500,000
Caminero’s year is quite similar to Vlad Guerrero Jr.’s second time through arbitration. Similar HR, Runs, RBIs, SB, OPB, and SLG. I’m hesitant to equal Vlad’s arb salary/raise, since Devers had a better season through almost every statistical category. It appears that Devers signed an extension to negate his first time through arbitration, which could hurt Caminero since the salary is only $11,200,000. And given that this is the only relatable 3B comp, this makes me think the final number wouldn’t be too much higher than this. Therefore, I went closer to Vlad, but couldn’t get all the way to Vlad’s $14,500,000 - ultimately settling at $13,500,000 for Caminero.
Platform Year
Arb 3 Estimate Rationale: $19,500,000
At this point in Caminero’s career, he seems to be pretty identical to Vlad and Devers. Heading into their 3rd year (Vlad was a Super Two), the HRs, RBI, AVG, OBP, and SLG are either the same or in the middle of these two players. Vlad had a slightly worse PY year for Arb 3 and Devers had a slightly better PY for Arb 3. Therefore, I don’t think Caminero gets the full bump to $19,900,000 ($5,400,000 raise) Vlad received. I also don’t think he’d quite get the raise Devers got ($6,300,000). So, a raise somewhere in the middle makes the most sense. I predicted a $6,000,000 raise from his Arb 2 number, which gives Caminero an Arb 3 salary of $19,500,000.Caminero’s year is quite similar to Vlad Guerrero Jr.’s second time through arbitration. CONTRACT EXTENSION PROPOSAL
Benchmark Extensions
NOTE: I’m assuming Junior Caminero is going to sign an extension at the end of the 2026 season with 2 years of service. Now that we’re a month into the season, I don’t expect an extension to happen until the offseason or spring training.
Tyler Soderstrom - Athletics: 7 Years / $86,000,000 Guaranteed
Relevance: Corner defender which derives more value from their hitting than their defence. Hit 25 HRs with a 3.4 fWAR in 2025 compared to Caminero’s 45 HRs with 4.6 fWAR. Additionally, Soderstrom’s wRC+ is more consistently above average 114 & 125 than some of the other potential options I’ve considered. Service time is a little different at 2.053 at time of signing compared to Caminero’s 1.058. However, I do think that, if Caminero were to sign an extension it would be after the 2026 season which would mean he’d be at 2 years of service as well.
Jackson Merrill - Padres: 9 Years / $135,000,000 Guaranteed
Relevance: 1 Year of service and similar age at the time of signing. Worth 5.3 fWAR after his first season, this is closer to the value I think Caminero brings - even if Merrill’s is through a combination of hitting and defence. With 24 HRs and a wRC+ of 130 in his first year of service, this again more reflects the offensive upside of Caminero.
Austin Riley - Braves: 10 Years / $212,000,000 Guaranteed
Relevance: Cheating a little here since Riley’s contract was during his first time through arbitration (as a Super Two), I think he better reflects the player Caminero is/could be. He is a power-hitting 3B with below average defence. With 33 HRs, a 136 wRC+, and a 5.1 fWAR in his first full season, this better matches Caminero’s potential. In Riley’s second full season (in which he signed his extension near the end of it - Aug 2022), he had 38 HRs, a 144 wRC+, and a 5.9 fWAR. While Caminero’s forecasted metrics (both mine and Fangraphs) don’t have him hitting that value in fWAR, I do think this is a better player comp and potential for a future Caminero contract.
Juilo Rodriguez - Seattle: 12 Years / $209,300,000 Guaranteed
Relevance: From an age perspective, Julio Rodriguez matches what you’re looking at with Caminero almost perfectly. With slightly fewer HRs (28), a slightly higher wRC+ (148), and a fWAR that’s 5.7, Rodriguez looks like he could be the slightly better player. That said, the defensive value of a centre fielder will affect the contract value. Caminero’s offensive numbers are forecast to be this or better for the foreseeable future. Therefore, you'd be paying for the offensive production rather than Caminero’s defence. Additionally, the AAV of $17,441,667, which closely aligns with the contract proposed below.
Total Contract: 9 Years / $155,000,000 (Club option in 2036 for two years for $25,000,000 per year for years 10 & 11)
Average Annual Value (AAV): $17.2M/AAV for the 9 years ($18.1M AAV with club options)
Contract Breakdown:
Guaranteed Years: 2027-2035
Option Years: 2036 club option for 2 years (2036 & 2037) worth $25M/Year with a $5M Buyout
Key Terms:
Escalators:
2036 & 2037 - $5M escalator for top 3 MVP during 2027-2033 seasons
$500,000 escalator for each season with 600 Plate Appearances
Award Bonuses:
Allstar - $50K
MVP $150K
The Proposed Offer
Contract Recommendation
The Rays should absolutely extend Caminero with this contract.
My projections have Caminero as a minimum 4 fWAR player throughout the time of his pre-arb and arb years. The two most common comp players were Devers and Guerrero Jr. Both of these players were 3-6 WAR players and ended up signing deals worth $300M and $500M. If you can get a player of that caliber for less, then that is an absolute must. You’d be “buying low” on a superstar and saving your team money during their prime years. Additionally, take into account it’s the Rays, they would appreciate the surplus value of a contract more than most teams.
That said, if the Rays don’t intend to offer him an extension, then they’d likely spend less going through arbitration ~$43M over the course of his 6 years of service. If we assume $8M per WAR, Caminero is likely to provide the Rays with ~$173M in surplus value, which is massive for a team.
Even then, I think the Rays should try to extend Caminero. If they take the contract extension proposed above, I still think the Rays would come out way ahead with ~$197M in surplus value. (Note I made quick assumptions about his WAR value from 2031, age 27, and onward. Based on his batspeed and contact metrics, I think he’ll keep putting up great numbers through his career and only started to decline his WAR significantly upon hitting 30.)
But, they may have missed their window.
Player and Agent Perspective
At this point in my career, if I was Caminero or his agent, I’d be betting on myself and strive for Free Agency. My best player comps through Caminero’s arbitration were Rafeal Devers and Vlad Guerrero Jr.. Both players signed contracts worth significantly more than the contract I’m proposing for the Rays. If getting your money’s worth is the goal of Caminero, then he should not accept the contract above and should try to test Free Agency as he’d be leaving a potential $100-300M on the table by signing the above contract.
Junior Caminero is the future cornerstone of the Rays franchise, if they overcome their financial aversion and pay for him. In 2025, Caminero led the Rays in almost all offensive stats: Games, ABs, HRs, RBIs, SLG, to name a few. His underlying metrics (batspeed, xSLG, Barrel%, Hard-Hit%, Avg Exit Velo) suggest he’ll continue to be an offensive force. The Rays should do something unimaginable for the franchise and lock him up long term. The $155M (upwards of $200M) contract offer is more than fair and would end up being a steal with a projected ~$190M in surplus value. Regardless if he stays at 3B or has to move to 1B, he is an offensive player you can build a team around, becoming the Yandy Diaz of the future, and eventually leading the Tampa Bay Rays to their first World Series Championship.
